KATHMANDU: Jagdamba Motors is preparing to expand its EV lineup in the Nepali market with the launch of Proton eMas 5.
This smaller sibling of eMas 7 is sold in China as Geome Xingyuan. Geome is an electric sub-brand of Chinese automotive giant Geely. Proton, which has a 49.9% Geely stake, is rebadging the Xingyuan as eMas 5 in Malaysia and its export markets.
The middle class is the largest consumer group in Nepal’s automobile sector. Until a few years ago, family hatchback cars were the preferred choice of this group. Although some gradually shifted from hatchbacks to SUVs, the demand for hatchbacks is still very high in the domestic market. Over half a dozen EV models are now available in the hatchback segment.
Jagadamba Motors is expected to launch eMas 5 in the Nepali market at around Rs 4 million. It will compete primarily with the BYD Dolphin and also target potential buyers of higher-end variants of the Nammi Box.
The eMas 5 measures 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width and 1,570 mm in height. Its spacious design makes eMas 5 suitable for urban families.

In China, Geome offers the car with two battery and motor options. However, only the higher-spec variant is likely to come to Nepal. This variant features an 85 kW motor delivering 150 Nm of torque, paired with a 40.16 kWh battery. It is equipped with Geely’s advanced ‘Shield Battery Safety System’ and offers a WLTP range of 310 km.
Designed to comfortably seat five passengers, the eMas 5 supports 3.3 kW AC charging and up to 80 kW DC fast charging. It comes with ADAS 2.0 safety features along with a host of modern comforts. The eMas 5 boasts a 14.6-inch infotainment system, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a multifunction steering wheel and 256-color ambient lighting. Other features in the car include a 50W wireless phone charger, keyless entry, four speakers and a six-way adjustable driver’s seat.
The eMas 5 can be an attractive option for those looking for a fully electric hatchback at a competitive price. If priced between the BYD Dolphin and the Nammi Box, it has the potential to be a true value-for-money contender in the Nepali EV market.
