KATHMANDU: French automaker Renault is joining with Chinese company Geely to develop electric vehicles for emerging markets.

According to Renault’s research team in China, the partnership is aimed at targeting Southeast Asian and South American markets.

Under the partnership, Geely will share its GEA platform, which is currently used in its Galaxy brand, with Renault. The platform supports both pure battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Renault, however, will develop all other components itself, according to Chinese media reports.

Renault has a strong presence in Europe, while Geely has previously shared its CMA platform with brands such as Volvo, Smart, Polestar and Zeekr.

The two companies had been exploring a long-term partnership for some time. Renault has a strong presence in Europe, while Geely has previously shared its CMA platform with brands such as Volvo, Smart, Polestar and Zeekr.

Renault is known in Europe for producing small and affordable EVs, while its SUV models have achieved significant success in South Korea, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and North Africa — regions where Renault already has a strong foothold. This motivated the company to focus on collaboration with Geely to produce electric and hybrid SUVs.

Once this partnership takes off, Renault will produce electric and hybrid cars in China and export them to its international markets.
