KATHMANDU: Tata Motors has recorded over 70,000 confirmed bookings for the new Sierra on the first day in India. Bookings opened on December 16 with a token amount of 25,000 Indian rupees.

The company said another 135,000 customers have selected their preferred variants. They are yet to complete formalities. Sources say more than 50 percent of bookings are for diesel variants, according to Autocar India.

The Sierra is among few midsize SUVs offering a diesel engine. Others include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Tata Curvv. Strong diesel demand shows buyers still prefer diesel in this segment. Automatic diesel variants remain popular.

The Sierra gets three engine options. These include a 1.5-litre NA (naturally aspirated) petrol with 106hp. A 1.5-litre diesel produces 116hp. A 1.5-litre turbo-petrol delivers 160hp.

Gearbox options vary by engine. The NA petrol gets a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT. The diesel offers a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. The turbo-petrol comes only with a 6-speed automatic.

The Sierra is available in seven trims. These are Smart Plus, Pure, Pure Plus, Adventure, Adventure Plus, Accomplished, and Accomplished Plus. Introductory prices range from 1.149 million to 2.129 million Indian rupee. (Ex-showroom)

Special milestones

The company also claims a new mileage record. Tata says the Sierra delivers up to 29.9 km/l. It is claimed to be the most efficient engine in Tata Motors’ lineup.

Tata Motors has gifted Sierra SUVs to all members of the Indian women’s cricket team. The move marks India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup win.
