KATHMANDU: Global automakers are preparing a new wave of off-road SUVs for the Indian market. Mahindra, Hyundai and Toyota are expected to introduce three new models by 2028 as demand for adventure-focused vehicles continues to grow.
Interest in off-roading, overlanding and outdoor travel has increased in recent years. Buyers are increasingly looking for SUVs with high ground clearance, four-wheel-drive capability and rugged construction.
Since many vehicles launched in India eventually arrive in Nepal, these upcoming models could also attract interest among Nepali buyers.
Mahindra Thar facelift
Mahindra is expected to introduce a facelifted version of the three-door Thar. Spy images suggest the updated SUV will adopt several styling cues from the larger Thar Roxx, including a redesigned front fascia, six-slot grille and circular LED headlamps with C-shaped daytime running lights.
The cabin is also expected to receive new convenience features such as keyless entry, push-button start, wireless phone charging and ventilated front seats. Mechanically, the SUV is likely to retain its existing engine and transmission options.
The Mahindra Thar already has a presence in Nepal, making the facelift a likely candidate for the local market.
Hyundai’s new off-road SUV
Hyundai is also developing a new off-road-oriented SUV for India. While the company has not revealed official details, industry reports indicate it could be based on a monocoque platform and offered with both petrol and petrol-hybrid powertrains.
The hybrid version is expected to feature an electric all-wheel-drive (e-AWD) system, using an additional electric motor to power the rear wheels. The model is anticipated to debut around 2028.
Hyundai’s SUV lineup has performed well in Nepal, which could improve the chances of this new model reaching the market after its Indian launch.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ
Toyota is preparing the Land Cruiser FJ, a compact body-on-frame SUV positioned below the Fortuner. The model is expected to enter the Indian market towards the end of 2028.
Internationally, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine producing 164 hp and 245 Nm of torque. It is likely to be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.
The SUV is expected to measure around 4,610 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,890 mm in height, with a 2,580 mm wheelbase and seating for five occupants.
Why it matters for Nepal
Nepal has traditionally been a strong market for rugged SUVs because of its mountainous terrain and mixed road conditions. Vehicles with higher ground clearance and four-wheel-drive systems remain popular among buyers.
As adventure travel, camping and off-road tourism continue to gain popularity, demand for capable lifestyle SUVs is also expected to grow. If these upcoming models are introduced in Nepal, they could further strengthen the country’s expanding off-road SUV segment.
