KATHMANDU: Traffic is set to begin on the newly built Bailey bridge connecting Nepal and China in Rasuwagadhi.

On July 8, the flood in the Lhende River washed away the concrete bridge connecting the two countries. Movement has begun from yesterday on the Bailey bridge, which was built by China at the site in five and a half months.

Nepali truck drivers have started heading towards Kerung since December 28. However, the movement of vehicles has not been opened.

Tulsi Prasad Bhattarai, Chief Customs Officer of Rasuwagadhi Customs Office, said that the drivers, assistant drivers and traders of containers have gone towards Kerung.

He said that Chinese officials at the border area have informed that the Rasuwagadhi border crossing will be opened on January 1. He said that his counterpart has sent the information.

‘Containers that went to pick up goods before July 8 have been stopped there. “Drivers and co-drivers have started going to Kerung from today to make arrangements to bring those containers,” he told MeroAuto. “Chinese officials have informed that the border will be operational from January 1.

Import and export of goods will start from the same day.” Trade between Nepal and China has been affected due to the closure of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing for almost six months. Rasuwagadhi is also the main customs crossing for importing goods from China.
