KATHMANDU: Volkswagen has announced a global recall of nearly 100,000 electric vehicles due to issues related to battery modules.
According to Germany’s motor vehicle authority Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), a total of 94,031 vehicles are affected worldwide. This includes 74,579 units from Volkswagen’s ID. series and 19,452 units of the Cupra Born.
Among these, around 28,000 vehicles are in Germany, including 22,182 Volkswagen models and 5,976 Cupra units. The recall covers several Volkswagen EVs, including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID. Buzz, and ID. Buzz Cargo.

The issue is linked to high-voltage battery modules that do not meet required specifications. This can reduce driving range and, in some cases, increase the risk of fire.
Volkswagen will carry out a software update on affected vehicles. The company will also inspect the high-voltage battery system. If needed, faulty modules will be replaced. The recall is listed under KBA reference number 16271R.
The development follows an earlier recall filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in January 2026. That recall affected 43,881 units of the ID.4 (model years 2023-2025) in the U.S., due to potential battery overheating and fire risk.
Volkswagen said similar corrective measures, including software updates and possible module replacement, will be applied where necessary.
