KATHMANDU: Volkswagen is ending production of the Touareg after 24 years. According to a report from Autocar UK, the premium SUV will be discontinued next year.

The Tayron will replace it as the brand’s largest SUV, available in five- and seven-seat versions.

The Touareg was launched in 2002. It shared its platform with the first-generation Porsche Cayenne. It was Volkswagen’s first step into the premium segment and was later followed by the Phaeton sedan. At one point, it even featured a massive 5.0L twin-turbo V10 diesel engine.

In recent years, the Touareg came with a 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine. The SUV was known for its luxury features, strong performance and solid build.

Volkswagen says the decision reflects changing market priorities. The Tayron is positioned as a more affordable SUV with wider global appeal.

In Nepal, Volkswagen’s official dealer, Pooja International, started selling the Touareg as its flagship SUV. As of September 2023, it was priced at Rs 32.5 million. It targeted the premium SUV segment in the Nepali market.

With global production ending soon, the Touareg’s presence in Nepal marks one of the final chapters in its journey.
