KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to make written and practical driving license tests stricter.
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport is bringing a new Vehicle and Transport Management Act 2025, which proposes changes to the current driving test system.
Under the draft law, the written exam will mostly remain the same. However, major changes have been proposed for the practical trial test.
Applicants may now need to drive on dirt roads and slippery surfaces during the trial test.
At present, candidates only need to drive inside the trial center. They do not need to face rough or slippery roads.
In many countries, license applicants must drive on different types of roads. Nepal is now planning to move in the same direction.
Officials believe many drivers who pass only inside trial centers struggle on rough or difficult roads. Because of this, the new system aims to test real driving ability before issuing a license.
The new trial may also assess whether applicants can safely drive on curved, uphill, and downhill roads.
In addition, candidates may be required to demonstrate their ability to move the vehicle forward and backward safely, maintain proper lane discipline, and park correctly in designated areas. Some of these tests are already included in the current system.
The written exam will continue to include questions on transport laws, traffic signs, and basic mechanical knowledge of vehicles. Only applicants who pass the written test will be eligible to take the practical driving trial.
