Ferrari’s manual gearbox returns, not quite as before

KATHMANDU: Ferrari has introduced the 12 Cilindri Manuale, bringing back the iconic gated shifter after 14 years. It is the first Ferrari road car with a gated shifter since the 599 GTB ended production in 2012.

Despite having three pedals and a gated gear lever, the car does not use a traditional manual gearbox. Instead, it uses Ferrari’s new Manual By-Wire system.

The clutch pedal and gear lever are connected electronically to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Ferrari says the system delivers the feel of a real manual while keeping the performance of an automatic.

Drivers still need to use the clutch to change gears. The car can even stall if the clutch is released incorrectly, just like a conventional manual. It also prevents incorrect downshifts that could damage the engine.

Inside, the 12 Cilindri Manuale gets a polished aluminum gated shifter, a round gear knob, and a redesigned center console. Ferrari also offers exclusive exterior colors, wheels, and interior finishes through its Tailor Made personalization program.

Power comes from the same 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine. It produces 819 hp and 678 Nm of torque. The engine revs up to 9,500 rpm.

Performance is unchanged. The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, reaches 200 km/h in under 7.9 seconds, and has a top speed of over 340 km/h.

Ferrari will produce only 1,499 units of the 12 Cilindri Manuale. Prices in Europe start at around USD 675,000. Deliveries will begin in early 2027, and nearly all units have already been sold.
