KATHMANDU: As competition among different brands intensifies in Nepal’s automobile market, a handful of large business houses have come to control a significant share of the international auto brands sold in the country.

Of the roughly 30 car, SUV, electric vehicle, motorcycle and commercial vehicle brands sold in Nepal, nearly all fall under the business umbrella of five major conglomerates.

Laxmi Group, MAW Group, Sharda Group, Golchha Organization and Vishal Group all maintain a notable presence in Nepal’s auto sector, distributing everything from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles to electric ones across the country.

Laxmi Group: 6 brands

Laxmi Group has long been an active player in Nepal’s automobile sector. The group handles brands including Hyundai, BAIC, BMW, Jetour, Kaiyi and SML Isuzu.

Hyundai, in particular, is one of the most well-established brands in the Nepali market. With the electric vehicle market expanding in recent times, Hyundai’s EV models have also been steadily growing their presence.

Alongside this, BMW in the premium segment and other brands in the commercial and SUV segments have widened the group’s overall portfolio.

MAW Group: 7 brands

MAW Group, which has been expanding aggressively in the automobile sector, holds 7 brands across various segments. The group deals in Yamaha, Skoda, Jeep, Deepal, Neta, Nammi and Eicher.

MAW’s presence has grown strong through Yamaha in the two-wheeler market, Jeep and Skoda in the premium and SUV segments, and Deepal and Nammi in the electric vehicle space. The group is also active in the commercial vehicle market through Eicher.

Sharda Group: 5 brands

Sharda Group has brought together Japanese, Chinese and newer-generation electric brands under a single portfolio in Nepal’s auto market. The group holds brands including Nissan, Omoda, Jaecoo, iCAUR and Chery.

Keeping in mind the rising popularity of Chinese brands in particular, Sharda Group has been expanding its presence in the SUV and EV markets through Omoda, Jaecoo, iCAUR and Chery.

Golchha Organization: 5 brands

Golchha Organization, one of Nepal’s oldest and largest business houses, is also active in the automobile sector with a diverse brand portfolio. The group holds Citroen, Peugeot, Leapmotor, Ford and GSW MG.

From the French brands Citroen and Peugeot to American brand Ford and Chinese electric brand Leapmotor, Golchha’s auto portfolio spans a wide range.

Vishal Group: 6 brands

Vishal Group also manages 6 brands in Nepal’s auto market. The group holds MG, GWM, Suzuki Motorcycle, Volkswagen, Mazda and Hongqi.

The group maintains a presence in the EV and SUV markets through MG and GWM, while Suzuki Motorcycle has built a strong position in the two-wheeler market. Volkswagen, Mazda and Hongqi, meanwhile, cover various premium and passenger vehicle segments.

Growing influence amid competition

As Nepal’s auto market undergoes a rapid shift towards electric vehicles, competition among these business houses is also becoming more interesting. With the same groups selling brands across different price points and segments, customers now have more options to choose from.

In particular, with the rapid entry of Chinese EV brands, competition has intensified between established, older brands and newer entrants trying to establish themselves in the market. This has strengthened not just brand-level competition, but also competition among the business houses themselves.

Overall, a small number of large business houses continue to hold significant influence over Nepal’s automobile market. Given the number and diversity of brands under their control, the strategies of these groups are likely to play an even more important role in shaping competition in Nepal’s auto market going forward.
