KATHMANDU: MG S5 and Nevo Q05, priced identically at around Rs 5 million, are competing head-to-head in Nepal’s electric SUV segment.
Both SUVs are priced at Rs 4.999 million. The MG S5 has been in this segment for the past one and a half years, with more than 1,300 units already imported into Nepal. Changan’s Nevo Q05 entered the market recently. Bookings opened last month, and deliveries have now begun.
Despite the similar price tag, the two SUVs carry different characters. The MG S5 feels built around the driver, with rear-wheel drive, independent rear suspension, a 99 kW motor and 250 Nm of torque. The Nevo Q05, on the other hand, is built around passengers, cargo and technology, with front-wheel drive, 540 liters of boot space, a longer wheelbase and a wide range of tech features.
Battery and range
The MG S5 Luxury comes with a 49.1 kWh battery, offering a claimed range of 340 km on a single charge. The Nevo Q05 has a slightly larger 51.9 kWh battery, with a claimed range of 360 km. Both figures are based on WLTP testing. Meroauto’s own reviews of both cars suggest real-world range comes close to these WLTP claims, although EV range depends largely on driving habits.
Dimensions
The two SUVs are close in size. The MG S5 measures 4,476 mm in length, 41 mm longer than the Nevo Q05’s 4,435 mm. The Nevo Q05 is 6 mm wider, at 1,855 mm against the S5’s 1,849 mm. The S5 is 21 mm taller, standing at 1,621 mm compared to the Q05’s 1,600 mm. The Q05 has a slightly longer wheelbase at 2,735 mm against the S5’s 2,730 mm.
Boot space
Buyers looking for more cargo room will find the Nevo Q05 more appealing, with 540 liters of boot space compared to 453 liters in the S5.
Behind the wheel
The MG S5 feels driver-focused from behind the wheel, with a strong combination of power and torque. The Nevo Q05 is not far behind in power, with a 120 kW motor, although its 190 Nm of torque is lower than the S5’s. The S5’s rear-wheel-drive setup feels sportier and more engaging.
Both SUVs feel agile in city driving. On the highway, the S5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 7.1 seconds, while the Q05 is claimed to do the same in about 8.2 seconds.
Ride comfort
On Kathmandu’s roads, potholes, speed bumps and rough highway stretches, the two SUVs show different characters. The Q05’s front end handles smooth roads comfortably, giving passengers a relaxed ride at moderate speeds. The S5’s independent rear suspension, however, copes better with potholes. The Q05 does have an advantage in ground clearance, at 190 mm against the S5’s 175 mm.
Cabin technology
MG has equipped the S5 with a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch instrument display. The Nevo Q05 goes further, with a 14.6-inch infotainment screen and a 10.17-inch instrument display. The Q05’s cabin also includes wireless phone charging, a 540-degree camera system, a built-in dash cam, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and modern ADAS features.
MG has not left the S5 short on features either, offering a 360-degree camera, wireless charger, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) support, and MG Pilot ADAS.
Exterior design
Design preference is subjective. The S5’s front end is clean and mature, with sleek lighting elements, a closed-off grille and a smooth body design that reflects a modern EV look. The Q05 looks like a next-generation EV at first glance, with striking headlights, a connected light bar, a clean front fascia and a sharp body design likely to appeal to younger buyers. Both SUVs come with 18-inch wheels.
Verdict
After days of use, comparing technical specifications and pricing, the purpose of each SUV becomes clear. The MG S5 is an electric SUV built around the driver. The Nevo Q05 is an electric SUV built around family and technology. Which one offers better value ultimately depends on the buyer’s priorities. Test driving both is recommended before deciding.
