KATHMANDU: People caught driving under the influence of alcohol can now take mandatory awareness classes from the comfort of their homes.

Since many felt embarrassed attending these sessions at the traffic police office, officials decided to launch a more private, online alternative. The online drink-driving awareness classes will be offered through the Nagarik app, in collaboration with Gyan Bazaar Pvt Ltd and the Nepal Police.

According to traffic police officials, the service is scheduled to launch on the occasion of the New Year 2082 BS.

A traffic police officer told Mero Auto that the system is ready and integrated with the updated version of the Nagarik app. Offenders will be verified through the app by entering their name, phone number and a unique code provided by the traffic police.

The platform uses AI-based facial recognition technology to ensure the correct individual is attending the session. Verification takes less than 60 seconds. Once participants complete the online class and pay the associated fine, their legal process is considered complete.
