KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has introduced a new standard for taxi services in Nepal.

The “Standards for Vehicles Used as Taxis, 2025,” which was unveiled recently, classifies taxis into General, Deluxe, and Luxury categories based on the level of service provided. This framework offers passengers a range of options tailored to their preferences and budgets.

Under this system, General taxis will adhere to fares set by the government, ensuring affordability. Deluxe taxis, designed for enhanced comfort and features, will charge a 20% premium over the General fare. Luxury taxis, catering to those seeking a high-end travel experience, will command a 100% surcharge above the General fare.

Additionally, petrol vehicles used as taxis must have a displacement of 1,000 cc (with up to a 1.5% variance allowed). The previous provision permitted vehicles with a minimum of 800 cc. For electric vehicles (EVs), a motor capacity of 40 kW or higher is required for registration as a General taxi.

Petrol vehicles with a capacity above 1,200 cc and EVs with a motor exceeding 50 kW can be registered as Deluxe taxis. Similarly, petrol vehicles with a displacement of 2,000 cc or more, or EVs with a motor of 100 kW or higher, qualify for registration as Luxury taxis.

This revised classification aims to provide passengers with greater choices while encouraging operators to elevate service standards.
