KATHMANDU: Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is working on a more affordable version of clutch automation for its riders.

The company is studying a cost-effective alternative to its current E-Clutch system. This move could bring a new level of convenience to everyday motorcycles in the region.

E-Clutch is an advanced technology already used on Honda’s 650cc four-cylinder bikes. It allows riders to change gears without using the clutch. The system also works when stopping or starting from a standstill. However, this feature is currently available only on premium models like the Honda CBR650 and CBR650R.

In an interview with Autocar India, HMSI’s Managing Director, President, and CEO, Tsutsumu Otani, stated that the E-Clutch is too costly for India’s price-sensitive market. However, he noted that a similar, more affordable solution tailored to Indian buyers is being considered.

“It’s not exactly the E-Clutch, but something that offers similar convenience at a more reasonable price,” Otani said.

Honda is not alone in this space. Several global manufacturers are working on different automatic or semi-automatic systems. Honda already has a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) system in its portfolio, but it is currently limited to high-end models.

At present, no locally made motorcycles in India offer automatic gearboxes or automated clutches. Honda’s move could mark the beginning of a new era for accessible riding technology in the country.
