KATHMANDU: India has made Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) mandatory on all two-wheelers from January 2026.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India, all two-wheelers, regardless of engine size, must have the ABS feature from January onwards.
Currently, ABS is mandatory only on two-wheelers with engine capacities above 125cc. Nearly 40% of two-wheelers on Indian roads still lack this safety feature, according to India Today.
ABS is considered crucial for reducing road accidents involving two-wheelers. It prevents wheel lock-up during sudden or forceful braking which helps the rider maintain control of the vehicle and reduces the risk of skidding and accidents.
Studies show that ABS can reduce the likelihood of accidents by 45-50%.
The policy change in India will also benefit Nepal, as the country imports most of the two-wheelers from its southern neighbors.
