KATHMANDU: India aims to double automobile production in the next five years. The country is targeting 50 million vehicles in production by 2030 and 200 million units by 2047.

To achieve this, a new national automotive mission plan (AMP) is being prepared. The plan will guide the industry for the next two decades and is expected to be released by the end of this fiscal year.

The mission will focus on localizing sustainable vehicles. This includes hydrogen, electric, CNG and biogas-powered models. However, it will not restrict the use of petrol and diesel vehicles.

An official said the plan is being made with industry consensus and linked with the “Viksit Bharat” goals. Around 30% of passenger vehicle production is expected to be exported in 2030. This share is projected to rise to 40% by 2047.

A senior industry executive noted that the figures are still under discussion. They may change after consultations with economists and policy think tanks like Niti Aayog. The final version of the plan should be ready before the fiscal year ends, according to ET.
