KATHMANDU: The EV vs ICE debate is now outdated. Sales from the past four years show that Nepali buyers trust electric cars.
Nearly four dozen brands now sell electric cars in the market. But only a few deliver consistent sales and reliable after-sales service in a market with around 13,000 annual car sales.
If you plan to buy an EV, choosing the right brand and model requires careful attention. Service quality, dealer network, and long-term support are important. Along with that, several practical factors help you make a financially smart decision.

Below are seven key points new EV buyers should consider:
- Battery size and range
Match the battery capacity and range with your vehicle type; SUV, hatchback, sedan, or mini car. A larger battery will cost more to replace later. A smaller battery may not meet your daily travel needs. Estimate your routine distance and decide accordingly.
- Charging speed
Some EVs support DC charging but charge very slowly. Go for at least 50 kW DC fast-charging support. For AC charging, choose models that support 7 kW or 11 kW to avoid inconvenience later.
- Ground clearance
Nepal’s road conditions demand higher clearance. Choose a model with 170–200 mm ground clearance for rough, uneven, or unpaved roads. Testing the suspension before buying is also wise.
- Battery and motor warranty
Battery warranty is a major topic in today’s EV market. The motor is equally important and expensive. Understand the warranty terms for both before making a decision.

- Price and resale value
Resale value for EVs has not been strong so far. With rising EV numbers, it is better to choose a brand known for retaining value in the used market. Since many good models now come at lower prices, shortlist one or two brands, negotiate, and then decide.
- Minimum safety features
Choose an EV that has a four- or five-star Global NCAP rating. Look for essential safety features like Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and four-wheel disc brakes.
- Battery safety
Battery safety is the core of an EV. Check if the battery pack meets IP67 or IP68 water-resistance standards. Choosing a model with strong regenerative braking improves both efficiency and safety.
