KATHMANDU: KTM has become the first MotoGP manufacturer to test its new 850cc engine on track. The private test took place at the Jerez circuit, marking an early step toward the 2027 MotoGP regulations.
The brand had revealed the 850cc engine in October. Track testing was not allowed earlier due to cost-control rules, but the restriction was lifted on November 17. KTM immediately moved ahead with development.
Test rider Pol Espargaro shared a short video from Jerez, showing the prototype fitted with the new engine and Pirelli tires. The clip highlighted the strong exhaust note, even with the reduced engine capacity. KTM Racing and Tech3 rider Maverick Vinales also reacted to the post, confirming the importance of the test.
KTM has not released technical details from the session. The video, however, shows clear progress and signals the company’s commitment to MotoGP, despite recent rumors about financial pressure.
MotoGP will shift to 850cc engines in 2027 along with reduced aerodynamics, no ride-height devices, and a full switch to Pirelli tires. KTM is the first to take the new engine to the track, putting the brand ahead in preparations for the next era of racing.
