KATHMANDU: Major global automakers have urged Washington to block Chinese car and battery makers from setting up factories in the United States.

They say the future of the American auto industry is at risk, Reuters reports.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which includes GM, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Stellantis, told Congress that China’s state-backed companies threaten fair competition.

The group asked lawmakers to keep restrictions that prevent Chinese-made vehicles and software from entering the U.S. market.

The alliance said China uses heavy subsidies to produce more cars and batteries than the market needs. It warned that this could lead to large-scale dumping at prices U.S. companies cannot match.

Representative John Moolenaar, who leads a House committee on China, said the U.S. must strengthen existing rules. He noted that China has become the world’s largest car exporter in just five years, shipping 6 million vehicles last year.

He said China’s control over raw materials and supply chains gives it an unfair edge.

Moolenaar also raised national security concerns. He warned that Chinese-made software or components could be used to access or disable vehicles during a conflict.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not commented on the issue.
