KATHMANDU: The total number of registered electric vehicles in Nepal has crossed 63,000 units, according to the National Transport Policy 2083 published by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.
The policy states that 63,280 electric vehicles were registered in the country by the end of fiscal year 2025/26. However, it does not provide a breakdown between two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
EV adoption has accelerated in recent years, supported by tax incentives, financial benefits and easier financing options. As a result, EV imports have continued to grow rapidly.
The policy says more than 70% of all private cars imported into Nepal are now electric. Based on the market share of new EV sales, Nepal has also emerged as the world’s second-largest EV market, behind only Norway.
Customs data also shows that Nepal imported more than 10,000 electric four-wheelers in each of the last two fiscal years. The growing use of EVs has helped reduce fuel imports while increasing the use of domestically generated electricity.
Despite the rapid growth, the policy notes that charging infrastructure, battery management, safety standards, recycling systems and operational regulations are still evolving and require further development.
The policy also reveals that Nepal had 6,249,732 registered vehicles as of mid-March 2026. More than 5 million of them are motorcycles, accounting for over 80% of the country’s total vehicle fleet.
