KATHMANDU: Two new electric hatchback models priced under Rs 4 million are set to enter the Nepali market, providing budget-conscious consumers with more affordable electric vehicle (EV) options.
Chinese EV giant BYD and Malaysian automaker Proton are preparing to introduce their latest offerings through their respective official dealers in Nepal.
BYD Seagull
BYD has already started exporting its entry-level hatchback, the Seagull, to international markets. In Europe, it is sold under the name Dolphin Surf. While the name for the Nepali market has yet to be confirmed, the model is expected to arrive soon through Cimex Inc—BYD’s official distributor in Nepal.
According to the company, the Seagull could be unveiled at the upcoming NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo or the NADA Auto Show.
The Seagull comes equipped with a host of premium features, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen, heated and electric ORVMs, rain-sensing wipers, 360° camera, wireless phone charging, heated seats and LED lighting. It is available with two battery options, 30 kWh and 43.2 kWh, offering a maximum range of up to 322 km on a single charge.

Proton eMas 5
Proton, which is represented in Nepal by Jagdamba Motors, is also gearing up to launch its second electric model—the eMas 5. Marketed as the Xingyuan in China, the eMas 5 targets Nepal’s growing premium hatchback segment.
The model is also expected to be showcased at one of the upcoming auto expos. It features a modern and sleek design and includes a range of high-end features such as an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, multifunction steering wheel, 14.6-inch infotainment system, keyless entry, ambient lighting, and ADAS 2.0 (Advanced Driver Assistance System).
The eMas 5 is likely to arrive in Nepal with a 40.16 kWh battery paired with an 85 kW motor. This setup offers a WLTP-certified range of approximately 310 km.
Expected Pricing
The BYD Seagull and Proton eMas 5 are expected to be priced between Rs 2.7 million and Rs 4 million.
