KATHMANDU: There was a time when SUVs in Nepal meant premium models like the Toyota Prado and Land Cruiser, and the Mitsubishi Pajero. Gradually, the market began to see compact SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi Outlander. However, since most of these were imported from Japan, their prices were very high.
The landscape started to shift when Indian automobile manufacturers began producing SUV-style vehicles. These were more affordable and quickly gained popularity, becoming a common sight on Nepali roads. More recently, Chinese brands have also entered the SUV market, providing consumers with more options.
Traditionally, SUVs were known for features like high ground clearance, four-wheel-drive capability, and rugged body frames. Although today’s compact or crossover SUVs do not have all these features, they are widely accepted as part of the SUV segment in the global market.
Until a few years ago, hatchbacks accounted for around 60% of Nepal’s private passenger vehicle market. Crossover SUVs now account for over 60% of total passenger car sales. Even smaller vehicles are being designed with SUV-like styling. So, what’s driving this shift in consumer preference? Here we present some of the reasons:
Road Conditions
Nepal’s road infrastructure is still developing. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and rough highways are common. SUVs, with their higher ground clearance and sturdy build, offer a smoother and more stable driving experience. This makes them well-suited for both urban and highway travel.
Family-friendly Design
Compact SUVs are ideal for families of four to five members. They offer ample cabin space and boot capacity which makes these cars practical for both everyday use and long-distance travel.
Powertrain Choices
SUVs are available in the Nepali market with both electric and fuel-powered powertrains. Electric SUVs are incredibly economical, costing as little as Rs 2 per kilometer to run. Fuel-powered SUVs, offering mileage of 10 to 14 km per liter, are also cost-effective.
Modern Features and Styling
Features like touchscreen infotainment systems, rearview cameras, sunroofs, airbags, 360-degree cameras, and even ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) are now standard in many SUVs. These tech-rich offerings enhance user comfort and attract modern buyers.
Conclusion
Compact SUVs are gaining popularity in Nepal due to the country’s road conditions, along with their modern features and a range of powertrain options. Consumers have also shifted to SUVs because they have more benefits compared to sedans or hatchbacks. As the middle class grows, SUVs have become the vehicles that reflect lifestyle aspirations.
