CHITWAN: Chitwan has strong potential to become a major automobile business hub as the city continues to grow as an economic center, according to local entrepreneur Gopal Bhattarai.
Bhattarai, who is active in Chitwan’s automobile sector and currently serves as the president of the Nepal Automobile Mechanics Entrepreneurs Federation, said the industry is facing several challenges.
One of the biggest concerns is the illegal entry of spare parts through the open Nepal-India border. He said smuggled parts are hurting the business of genuine spare parts suppliers and authorized service centers. He stressed the need for stronger market monitoring to control illegal imports.
Bhattarai also highlighted the growing shortage of skilled technicians in the auto service sector. He said many young people avoid becoming mechanics because they see it as a job that involves getting their hands dirty.
“We need to show young people that this profession has good career opportunities. Otherwise, the industry will become increasingly dependent on Indian workers,” he said.
He added that vehicle importers should support dealers beyond vehicle sales by providing technical training, business support, and after-sales assistance. He also called for a clear government policy defining the role and protection of dealers.
With the number of electric vehicles increasing, Bhattarai said local garages must be equipped with EV repair skills and modern technology. He believes developing Chitwan as a planned auto hub would help expand service infrastructure, create jobs, and improve access to quality automotive services.
Bhattarai said the private sector is ready to invest if the government gives priority to developing an auto hub.
