KATHMANDU: The Toyota RAV4 continues to be one of the most popular SUVs in the world. In 2025, Toyota sold around 480,000 units in the US market alone.

The SUV is available in petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. Among them, the hybrid variant has seen the strongest demand globally.

In Nepal, the RAV4 also has a strong fan base. Toyota’s image of reliability and long-term durability plays a big role in this demand. However, pricing limits its reach. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid costs around Rs 27 million in Nepal.

This places it in the premium segment and out of reach for many buyers. As a result, Toyota is seen as a premium but dependable brand in the local market.

Reasons behind RAV4’s strong global demand

Fuel efficiency is one of the biggest reasons for the RAV4’s success. Toyota claims the RAV4 Hybrid can travel up to 1,000 km on a full tank. This is a major advantage in countries like Nepal, where fuel prices are high.

The SUV also comes with all-wheel drive, making it suitable for different road conditions. It performs well in the mountains, hills, and the flatlands. Globally, it is also trusted on snow and slippery roads.

The RAV4 Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The petrol engine produces 178 bhp, while the electric motor adds 118 bhp. The combined output is 296 bhp, with 402 Nm of torque. This setup offers smooth and comfortable driving.

In terms of safety, the RAV4 has received a 5-star rating from global NCAP tests. It comes with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes several advanced safety features. Strong resale value and long service life further add to its appeal.

Hybrid-only future for RAV4

Toyota has introduced the sixth-generation RAV4 as a hybrid-only model from 2026. The petrol-only version will no longer be offered. Buyers will have the choice of a regular hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.

This is a major move, as the RAV4 is America’s best-selling non-truck vehicle. In 2024, it sold around 480,000 units. By switching to hybrid-only, Toyota is expected to reduce fuel use on a large scale without changing buyer habits.

The hybrid version uses around 25 percent less petrol than the regular petrol model.

The new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can run up to about 80 kilometers on electric power alone on a full charge. It also supports DC fast charging, making it more practical for daily driving and short-distance travel.
