KATHMANDU: The government is moving ahead with a major road upgrade plan in the Koteshwor–Jadibuti–Tinkune corridor to reduce long-standing traffic congestion.

The project is based on a detailed study conducted by JICA, which evaluated multiple design options including flyovers and underpasses. The final selected option is considered the most practical and cost-effective.

A loan agreement worth Rs 31.76 billion has already been signed between the Government of Nepal and the Government of Japan on December 3, 2025. The loan carries a low interest rate of 0.2 percent and a repayment period of 30 years.

The proposed upgrade includes a 1.8 km multi-level road system in the Koteshwor area. It also features a 440-meter flyover and a 640-meter underpass near the airport side. In addition, another 400-meter flyover will be built toward the Tinkune side to manage outgoing traffic.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to allow uninterrupted traffic flow without the need for vehicles to stop at intersections.

According to the study, around 18 private structures will be affected by the construction work. The project will now move into the implementation phase following environmental and financial approvals.
