KATHMANDU: Tesla has introduced a new safety feature that uses vehicle cameras to help deploy airbags earlier before an unavoidable crash, according to automaker.

The company says its Tesla Vision camera system can detect a possible collision and help the restraint system react up to 70 milliseconds earlier. The system is designed to improve occupant protection during severe impacts.

Traditional airbag systems rely on impact sensors that detect a crash after it begins. Tesla’s camera-based system can analyze the situation before impact and prepare safety components such as seatbelt pretensioners.

Tesla said the cameras can identify the type of collision, estimate the time before impact, and predict the possible severity of the crash. This allows the vehicle’s safety system to prepare in advance.

However, cameras alone will not control airbag deployment. Tesla vehicles will continue using traditional impact sensors as the final decision system for activating airbags.

The feature will be introduced to existing Tesla vehicles through an over-the-air software update. The company has not confirmed all models that will receive the update.
