KATHMANDU: Tesla has revealed that its upcoming Cybercab robotaxi will feature a built-in Starlink V5 antenna, bringing SpaceX’s satellite internet technology directly into the autonomous vehicle.
The announcement was made through posts on X by Tesla and Starlink, accompanied by a cutaway image showing the Starlink antenna integrated into the vehicle’s roof. However, neither company shared technical details, launch timing, or explained how the satellite connection will be used.
Starlink described the feature as “high-speed internet from space for the future of autonomous vehicles,” while Tesla simply stated that Starlink V5 is directly integrated into the Cybercab.
Tesla’s autonomous driving system is designed to operate independently of an internet connection. The Cybercab’s onboard computer handles perception, planning, and driving without relying on cloud connectivity.
The internet connection is instead expected to support services such as fleet management, navigation updates, over-the-air software updates, remote assistance, and in-car entertainment.
Satellite connectivity could also improve network coverage in areas with weak cellular service. However, Tesla’s robotaxi service currently operates only within limited geofenced areas in cities such as Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Miami, where conventional mobile networks are already widely available.
Tesla has yet to confirm whether the integrated Starlink antenna will be a production feature or part of a future development plan.
