KATHMANDU: The BAIC BJ30e has been designed with the outward appearance of a traditional off-road SUV, although its core strength is said to lie in its strong hybrid powertrain, according to the company.
With a boxy design, upright stance, high ground clearance and rugged styling, the SUV presents the look of a capable off-roader while being built around everyday practicality and efficiency.
The BJ30e is not positioned solely for rough terrain use. Instead, it has been introduced as a modern family SUV that combines hybrid technology with spaciousness and comfort.
The vehicle is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor and BAIC’s Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). According to the company, the hybrid system has been designed to deliver smooth low-speed driving, instant torque during acceleration and improved fuel efficiency compared to a conventional petrol SUV.
In everyday driving conditions, the electric motor is said to assist during initial acceleration, hill climbs and overtaking, while the petrol engine provides the primary driving force. At higher speeds, both the engine and motor are reported to work together to maximize performance.

On the interior, the BJ30e is equipped with a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The minimalist dashboard layout, along with a 2,820 mm wheelbase, is said to provide generous cabin space for passengers. The rear seats can be folded to further expand the luggage area, which the company says makes the SUV suitable for long family trips as well as daily use.
The exterior is defined by a square silhouette, upright front fascia, prominent wheel arches, thick body cladding and elevated ride height — elements that, according to the company, give the BJ30e a more rugged character than a typical urban SUV while retaining family-oriented usability.
In terms of dimensions, the BJ30e measures 4,730 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width and 1,790 mm in height, placing it in the midsize SUV segment.
The version expected to arrive in Nepal will reportedly feature an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. It is equipped with a 1.67 kWh battery pack, which supports the strong hybrid system rather than functioning as a plug-in hybrid setup, the company said.
How the strong hybrid system works
The BJ30e uses a strong hybrid (HEV) system. According to the company, during low-speed city driving, the SUV can rely primarily on electric power to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
As speed increases, the petrol engine and electric motor are said to operate together to deliver stronger acceleration and overall performance. During braking and deceleration, the regenerative braking system recovers energy and recharges the battery automatically, eliminating the need for external charging, the company added.
