KATHMANDU: The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has urged owners of nearly 463,000 Kia Telluride SUVs to park their vehicles outdoors due to a potential fire risk until recall repairs are completed, according to Reuters.

The recall covers 2020 to 2024 model-year Kia Telluride crossover SUVs sold in the United States.

According to NHTSA, the front power seat motor can overheat and potentially catch fire. The agency said the issue may occur when the vehicle is parked or while it is being driven.

This is the second recall related to the same problem. The affected vehicles were first recalled in 2024, but regulators found that an improper repair under the earlier recall could still allow the seat motor to overheat and cause a fire.

NHTSA said the problem can occur if the front power seat slide cover or adjustment knob is accidentally struck. This may dislodge or damage the seat switch, causing the seat motor to run continuously and overheat.

Kia has reported seven seat fires and 11 cases of seat motors melting linked to the defect. However, no injuries have been reported.

The automaker will begin notifying affected vehicle owners from August 13. Customers will be asked to visit their nearest Kia dealership for a free repair.

As part of the new remedy, dealers will install an electronic fuse assembly. The component is designed to stop continuous operation of the seat motor if the seat switch becomes damaged or misaligned.

Until the repair is completed, NHTSA has advised all affected Telluride owners to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings and other vehicles to reduce the risk of fire.
