KATHMANDU: BYD has set a new sales record in Nepal, becoming the first electric vehicle brand in the country to cross the 11,000-unit milestone.
More than three dozen EV brands are currently available in Nepal, but BYD is the first to reach this figure. Although the brand officially entered Nepal in 2017, its sales have grown significantly over the past four years.
BYD sold a total of 11,333 units between June 2021 and August 15, 2026. Including the vehicles sold before 2021, its total sales have reached around 11,350 units.
BYD has been in Nepal for nine years, but it has been selling vehicles in significant numbers for only around four years. The company first crossed four-digit annual sales in 2022.
Cimex Inc., the authorized distributor of BYD in Nepal, brought the first BYD electric MPV, the e6, to Nepal in March 2017. However, it started selling passenger cars from October 2022.
The introduction of new models based on customer demand, along with the expansion of its dealer, service and charging networks, has played a major role in BYD’s growth in Nepal.
Cimex currently sells BYD vehicles ranging from entry-level hatchbacks to premium SUVs. Its vehicles are priced from around Rs 3.1 million to nearly Rs 40 million.
BYD has brought 11 models to Nepal across the MPV, SUV, sedan and pickup segments. The Dolphin and e6 are no longer on sale, while the other models are currently available.
The current lineup includes the M6, Atto 3, Atto 2, Atto 1, Sealion 7, Denza D9, Denza B5/B8, Seal and Shark.
The company has also expanded its sales, service and charging network. BYD currently has more than a dozen showrooms and service centers across the country, along with more than 60 charging stations.
BYD sales by year
BYD first brought 5 units of the e6 to Nepal in 2017. There were no further imports until 2020. In 2021, Cimex imported 26 units of the all-new e6.
BYD entered Nepal’s passenger car segment in October 2022. That year, the company imported 95 units of EVs, including 10 units of the Atto 3 and 85 units of the e6.
Sales gained strong momentum in 2023. The company imported 2,084 units that year, including 1,532 units of the Atto 3, 551 units of the Dolphin and 1 unit of the Seal.
In 2024, BYD recorded a then-record 3,530 units in EV sales. The total included 2,068 units of the Atto 3, 1 unit of the Atto 1, 1,355 units of the Dolphin, 1 unit of the Sealion 7, 4 units of the Seal and 101 units of the M6.
In 2025, Cimex imported 3,487 units of BYD EVs. These included 636 units of the Atto 3, 1,072 units of the Atto 2, 830 units of the Atto 1, 535 units of the Dolphin, 271 units of the Sealion 7, 1 unit of the Seal and 142 units of the M6.
Imports have remained strong in 2026. As of August 15, Cimex had imported 2,112 units of BYD EVs in the first seven and a half months of the year.
The total includes 53 units of the Atto 3, 1,403 units of the Atto 2, 471 units of the Atto 1, 176 units of the Sealion 7, 7 units of the Denza B5/B8, 1 unit of the Denza D9 and 1 unit of the M6.
With four months still remaining in the year and the festive season approaching, BYD’s imports are expected to increase further.
Which BYD model has sold the most?
Cimex has brought 11 models of BYD to Nepal so far. Three models have already crossed the 2,000-unit mark.
The Atto 3 is BYD’s best-selling model in Nepal, with 4,299 units imported so far. The SUV entered the Nepali market in October 2022 and has maintained strong demand.
The Atto 2 ranks second, with 2,475 units imported within a year of its arrival. It has quickly become one of the most popular EVs in Nepal.
The Dolphin hatchback follows with 2,441 units. It arrived in Nepal in December 2024. However, its imports have been stopped since last year after BYD introduced the Atto 1 in the hatchback segment.
The Atto 1 has recorded 1,302 units. One unit arrived in December 2024, followed by 830 units in 2025 and 471 units in 2026.
Other BYD models have recorded imports of fewer than 1,000 units.
Cimex has imported 448 units of the premium Sealion 7. The model arrived in Nepal in August 2024, with 1 unit imported that year, followed by 271 units in 2025 and 176 units in 2026.
Similarly, the M6 MPV has recorded 244 units, while the Denza B5/B8 plug-in hybrid SUVs have recorded 7 units. The Seal sedan has recorded 6 units, while the luxury Denza D9 has recorded 1 unit.
