KATHMANDU: Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks (a division of Daimler Truck AG) has introduced its most luxurious Unimog so far. The model is a one-off show vehicle. It previews the brand’s 80th anniversary next year.

Luxury is now reaching all-terrain vehicles as well. The Unimog remains a highly capable off-road truck. It is designed for multiple uses. It can work year-round or serve as an expedition vehicle.

The special model is based on the Unimog U 4023. It was developed with Hellgeth Engineering. Core off-road hardware is retained. This includes portal axles, selectable all-wheel drive, and front and rear differential locks.

The engine has been upgraded. It now uses a 7.7-litre six-cylinder OM 936 turbodiesel. Output stands at 295hp. Maximum torque can reach up to 1,069 lb-ft.

Mercedes says this is the most powerful off-road Unimog yet. While shown as a concept, it will see real-world testing next year. The testing will support a possible production decision.

The exterior features matte grey paint. It uses the MirrorCam system instead of side mirrors. LED headlights and taillights are standard. Aluminum bead lock wheels improve off-road strength.

The cabin is focused on comfort. It gets premium leather upholstery. Leather is used on the roof and floor mats as well. Seats are more ergonomic with contrast stitching. Ambient LED lighting is also included.

A standard Unimog U 4023 starts at around USD 225,000. This luxury version is expected to cost much more if produced.
