KATHMANDU: The Delhi government is considering offering financial incentives to convert old petrol and diesel vehicles into electric vehicles under its proposed EV Policy 2.0.
According to media reports, the transport department has proposed an incentive of 50,000 Indian rupees for the first 1,000 vehicles that are retrofitted with electric powertrains.
Government officials say the move is aimed at owners of high-end vehicles who are reluctant to scrap their cars due to low resale value compared to the original purchase price. The proposed incentive is expected to make EV retrofitting a more viable option for such vehicle owners.
In addition to retrofitting support, the government has also proposed benefits for owners who scrap end-of-life vehicles and replace them with new electric vehicles. These measures are intended to accelerate EV adoption and help reduce vehicular pollution in the capital.
The proposed EV Policy 2.0 also includes the creation of 1000 million Indian rupees fund to strengthen the EV ecosystem through research and development. Other proposals include an incentive of up to 600,000 Indian rupees for battery swapping stations and the introduction of a safety star rating system for e-rickshaws and e-carts.
