KATHMANDU: Chinese EV giant BYD is reportedly in discussions to enter Formula One as part of its strategy to increase global brand visibility.

According to a Bloomberg report, the company is exploring ways to participate in the championship as it continues to expand its international vehicle sales.

If confirmed, BYD would become one of the newest entrants to the series, following the recent debut of the Cadillac Formula One Team backed by General Motors.

Formula 1 has used hybrid powertrains for more than a decade, but the upcoming 2026 regulations significantly increase the role of electric power.

Under the new rules, the MGU-K electric motor will deliver up to 350 kW, nearly three times the previous 120 kW output. This means roughly half of the car’s total power will now come from electric energy, combined with a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine.

BYD ended production of ICE-only vehicles in March 2022, shifting its focus entirely to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). The move towards a more electrified Formula 1 powertrain aligns with the company’s current technology direction.

If the company enters the championship, it could potentially use technology from its premium brand Yangwang. The brand’s flagship hypercar, the Yangwang U9, uses BYD’s e⁴ platform with four independent electric motors producing about 960 kW (1,287 hp) and accelerating from 0-100 km/h in around 2.3 seconds.

It remains unclear whether BYD will join as a new team or acquire an existing one, with reports mentioning the possibility of involvement with the Alpine F1 Team.

The company is also reportedly exploring participation in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Meanwhile, other Chinese automakers are also showing interest in motorsport. Chery is reportedly considering a future entry into the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while Nio has already been competing in Formula E for several years.
