KATHMANDU: Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world’s largest EV battery maker, has launched a repair service for its cell-to-pack (CTP) batteries.

The service, rolled out in China on August 10 by CATL’s aftermarket arm Ning Service, aims to cut costs for EV owners and expand the company’s growth avenues.

CTP technology, widely used in new energy vehicles, increases energy density and space efficiency by integrating cells directly into battery packs. But this design has made repairs difficult, with damaged packs usually replaced entirely.

CATL’s new service breaks this “replace-only” trend, offering repairs at a fraction of the replacement cost.

In China, the cost of repairing a CTP battery compared to replacing it represents a savings of approximately 80 % to 90 %, according to Ning Service engineers.

The company operates over 1,100 service centers across 75 countries, including more than 800 in China, providing testing, maintenance, recycling and regeneration services for EV batteries.

CATL holds a 37% global battery market share, with Nepal accounting for up to two-thirds of its market presence in the region. Most EVs sold in Nepal use CATL batteries, making their role significant in the local market.

For many owners, battery replacement is a major concern, as it can offset years of fuel savings. With CATL already present in the country, introducing their repair model could alleviate cost concerns for thousands of EV users and make electric mobility even more viable.

As time passes, battery-related issues will likely become more frequent, making such services increasingly essential.
