KATHMANDU: The government is preparing a strategy to install EV charging stations at petrol pumps across Nepal as part of its plan to increase domestic electricity consumption.
The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has included the provision in the ‘Energy Consumption Growth and Export Strategy 2083.’ The policy aims to promote the use of electric vehicles and expand charging infrastructure nationwide.
Under the strategy, charging stations will be developed at petrol pumps and along major routes at fixed distances to improve EV accessibility. The government has set a target to complete the nationwide charging network by FY 2028/29.
The plan also seeks active participation from the Nepal Electricity Authority and the private sector in building charging infrastructure. Coordination for the project will be handled by the NEA along with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.
The government believes that expanding charging infrastructure will help accelerate EV adoption in Nepal.
In addition to charging stations, the strategy also focuses on increasing electricity consumption through the operation of electric buses and trolley buses in major cities.
The policy further includes measures such as promoting induction cooktops, replacing coal boilers with electric boilers and furnaces, converting irrigation systems to fully electric pumps, and encouraging the establishment of fertilizer industries and data centers.
According to the ministry, Nepal’s total installed electricity generation capacity has reached 4,296 MW. The figure is expected to increase to 4,500 MW by the end of the current fiscal year.
