KATHMANDU: MG was forced to end a livestream introducing its new MG07 electric sedan after viewers repeatedly claimed the car closely resembles the Porsche Taycan and Xiaomi SU7.
The livestream, held on June 29, was hosted by Chen Cui, MG’s head of brand operations. Instead of discussing the car’s design, the session was dominated by comments accusing MG of copying rival models.
According to Chinese media, Chen denied the allegations, saying the MG07 “does not plagiarize a single detail.” The livestream was later ended early.

At a later media briefing, Chen defended the sedan’s design. He said the MG07 draws inspiration from MG’s own heritage rather than other brands.
He pointed to classic models such as the 1965 MGB GT fastback, describing the new sedan as a modern interpretation of MG’s long-standing design language.
The debate comes as many modern EVs are adopting similar shapes to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Features such as low front ends, flush door handles, smooth body panels, and fastback rooflines are becoming common across the industry because they help reduce drag and increase driving range.

However, many observers continue to compare the MG07 with the Porsche Taycan. Its headlights, side profile, and some wheel designs have also been likened to the Xiaomi SU7, which has itself faced comparisons with Porsche.
MG maintains that the MG07 is an original design inspired by its own history. The discussion has also highlighted a broader challenge for EV makers creating distinctive styling while meeting increasingly demanding aerodynamic targets.
