KATHMANDU: It has been a year since the Omoda E5 electric SUV hit Nepali roads. After initially arriving as a demo unit for test drives and feedback, official sales began in March 2024. Since then, the vehicle has made a notable impression, with 630 units sold in a short span of time. Many owners say they are satisfied with their decision.
“We can’t say the Omoda E5 underperformed in the market-it met expectations, but we believe it could have done even better,” said Gaurav Sarda, Managing Director of SPG Automobiles, the official distributor. “We’re moving forward as per our targets, and consumer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”
During our interactions with E5 owners, we found most were very happy with their experience. “I bought the E5 shortly after its launch. Its handling, range and performance have been excellent. I have driven 22,000 kilometers in 10 months, and it has fulfilled all my needs,” said Abdesh Bhattarai from Chandrapur, Rautahat.
Growth and future strategy
SPG Automobiles has seen strong momentum in just six months, with over 800 Omoda/and Jaecoo vehicles on the road and mostly positive user feedback.
Gyanendra Chand, general manager at SPG Automobiles, said they have now expanded to 17 showrooms across Nepal and actively participated in major events like the NPL. He acknowledged that Omoda E5 sales were initially slower than expected due to a limited dealership and service network-an area the company has since addressed.
Regarding user feedback, Chand said there have not been any major complaints so far. “Our service centers are well-equipped to handle customer issues efficiently,” Chand said, adding that Omoda currently ranks second in the Rs 5-7 million EV segment.
Looking ahead, Chand said SPG plans to introduce two new models in the second year. He cited changing government policies as a major challenge in expansion. “But we remain focused on strengthening our brand and ensuring customer satisfaction,” he added.
On the topic of service and maintenance, Chand said that the company has built a capable after-sales service team and continues to invest in its development. However, he added that high EV part costs remain an issue due to limited global production and advanced technologies.
In terms of infrastructure, Chand said that SPG is actively working on installing EV charging stations along the East-West Highway. So far, 30 locations have been equipped, with more installations on the way, he added.
To mark its first anniversary, SPG Automobiles has offered discounts of up to Rs. 515,000 on Omoda and Jaecoo EVs.
What’s next?
SPG is looking forward to the launch of the Jaecoo J5 in the near future. First showcased at the Omoda/Jaecoo International Summit 2024, the new SUV will be offered in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid versions. While technical specifications have not been revealed yet, the J5 is expected to arrive in April.
The Jaecoo J5 measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,650 mm in height, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase. It’s slightly smaller than the J6, but features a distinct body design. Positioned as a B-segment SUV, the J5 is expected to combine advanced technology, a stylish look and practical features aimed at everyday users.
