KATHMANDU: Global ride-hailing platform Uber has started allowing users in Nepal to register accounts using Nepali mobile numbers. The development indicates the company could be preparing for a future entry into Nepal’s ride-hailing market.
Users in Kathmandu can now download the Uber app, create accounts with local phone numbers, and view promotional offers inside the platform. However, the app currently shows “No rides available,” confirming that commercial ride services have not started yet.
Screenshots shared by users show introductory offers of Rs 30 off on Uber Go rides and Rs 15 off on bike rides. The offers suggest the platform may already be testing localized ride categories and pricing for the Nepali market.
Although Uber has not officially announced its Nepal launch, recent discussions on online forums and social media indicate growing speculation about the company’s entry plans. Some users have also reported being able to create accounts with Nepali mobile numbers for the first time.
Founded in 2009 and headquartered in San Francisco, Uber operates in around 70 countries and thousands of cities worldwide. The company provides ride-hailing, courier, food delivery, and freight services through its digital platform.
If Uber formally launches in Nepal, it will enter an already competitive ride-sharing market. Platforms such as Pathao, inDrive and other domestic services are currently active in cities including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Pokhara.
Nepal’s ride-sharing sector has expanded rapidly over the last few years. Increasing smartphone use, digital payments, and demand for affordable urban mobility have helped ride-hailing platforms grow across major cities.
For now, Uber’s app registration feature appears to be active in Nepal, but the company has not confirmed an official launch date or operational timeline.
