KATHMANDU: A camouflaged prototype of the next-generation BYD Dolphin has been spotted testing in China, hinting at major upgrades for the popular compact electric hatchback.

According to Chinese automotive sources, the 2026 BYD Dolphin will likely feature BYD’s CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery integration technology, a redesigned rear suspension setup, possibly four-link or five-link and a new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) option.

Reports also suggest a larger battery pack, higher-output motors, and the addition of a front trunk (frunk).

Preliminary data indicate that the top variant could deliver over 520 km CLTC range, powered by BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0.

Inside, the upcoming model is expected to feature a minimalist dashboard, dual-tone seats, and a large floating touchscreen powered by DiLink 5.0 and the Qualcomm 8295 chip, offering rapid voice response and optional L2+ driver assistance with highway NOA (Navigation on Autopilot).

The exterior is expected to follow BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” design language, with slimmer LED headlights, smaller air intakes, and full-width rear taillights. The car’s dimensions are expected to remain close to the current model; 4,280 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm high, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase.

The 2026 BYD Dolphin is expected to be priced between around USD 14,000–18,200, similar to the current model.
