KATHMANDU: The import of 7,967 units in the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2024/25 shows the Nepali electric vehicles (EV) market is experiencing a remarkable surge.
This growth reflects the increasing popularity of EVs, with more than four dozen brands now offering approximately 100 models in Nepal.
In Chaitra (mid-March to mid-April) alone, the country imported 973 units comprising 29 models from 16 brands, customs data shows.
Chinese EV giant BYD led the market with 202 units from three models imported during the month. Dolphin was the most popular BYD model in the review month with 150 units imported, followed by M6 (51) units. A single unit of the eagerly awaited Shark hybrid pickup was also imported in Chaitra.
Sipradi Trading, the authorized distributor of Tata in Nepal, imported 187 units across five models. The most popular Tata model during the month was the Express-T, commonly used as taxis, with 102 units imported. Similarly, 38 units of Punch EV, 33 units of Tiago EV, 10 units of Nexon K3 and four units of the coupe-styled Curvv EV were imported during the month.
MAW Vriddhi, the official distributor of Dongfeng in Nepal, imported 140 units across three models. It imported 80 units of Nammi, 40 units of Seres Mini and 20 units of Seres 3.
The company, which also represents Deepal in Nepal, also imported 70 units, including 44 units of the Deepal S07 and 26 units of the E07.
Likewise, Paramount Motors, the authorized distributor of MG for Nepal, imported 105 units of the newly-launched S5. Laxmi Intercontinental, Hyundai’s official partner in Nepal, introduced 60 units of the newly launched Creta Electric.
On the other hand, SPG Automobiles, the official distributor of Omoda and Jaecoo, imported a total of 58 units – 32 units of Jaecoo J6 and 26 units of Omoda E5.
Likewise, Sarina G Trade imported 50 units of the EV Easy, which is becoming increasingly common as taxis in Kathmandu Valley.
Jagdamba Motors, which represents Malaysian brand Proton in Nepal, imported 30 units of the eMAS 7 in Chaitra. Similarly, Shangrila Motors, the authorized distributor of Leapmotor, imported 20 units across two models: five units of the C10 and 15 units of the T03.
LRR Motors imported 13 units of the Brumby EV, while S Cube Enterprises, the official distributor of Henrey, brought in six units of the Henrey Volts.
Laxmi Premium, which represents BMW in Nepal, imported three units across two models – the iX3 and iX1.
Nexon Venture imported two units of the LEV01 EV, while Shangrila Motors imported one unit of the Citroën eC3.
Additionally, two units of the high-end luxury Porsche Macan 4 EV also made their way into Nepal during the review month.
