KATHMANDU: MG Motor has become the first Chinese automotive brand to record cumulative sales of more than one million vehicles in Europe and the United Kingdom. The milestone highlights the growing presence of Chinese automakers in the European market.

The brand, originally founded in the UK, was acquired by Nanjing Automobile Corporation in 2005. It later came under the ownership of SAIC Motor after SAIC acquired Nanjing Automobile in 2007.

In 2025, MG sold more than 300,000 vehicles across Europe and the UK, including over 85,000 units in the UK market alone. This represents nearly 30 percent year-on-year growth. The brand also maintained its position as the best-selling Chinese automotive brand in Europe for the 11th consecutive year and ranked 16th in the overall European and UK markets, making it the only Chinese brand to enter the top 20.

Sales growth was supported by strong demand for electrified models. In 2025, MG sold around 137,000 units from its Hybrid+ lineup, marking a 300 percent year-on-year increase. The company also delivered about 46,000 fully electric vehicles during the same period.

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, MG was already the best-selling Chinese car brand in Europe in the first half of 2025 with 153,000 vehicles sold.

During the period, the brand also surpassed Tesla in half-year sales. MG’s 18.6 percent year-on-year growth also outpaced the broader European market, which recorded a 0.9 percent decline.

MG’s expansion in Europe has accelerated in recent years. The brand sold more than 50,000 vehicles in the region in 2021, crossed 100,000 units in 2022 and exceeded 200,000 units in 2023. Cumulative sales in Italy, Spain and France have each passed the 100,000-unit mark.

The UK remains MG’s largest market in Europe, with cumulative sales exceeding 370,000 vehicles, including more than 100,000 pure electric models. In January this year, MG delivered nearly 26,000 vehicles across Europe, representing around 15 percent year-on-year growth.

In Nepal, MG offers a diverse lineup of electric vehicles distributed by Paramount Motors.
