KATHMANDU: Nepal’s automobile market has slowed down at the start of 2026. Average monthly passenger car imports have dropped to 856 units, down from 1,323 units in 2025.
The slowdown is linked to the parliamentary elections, high existing stock, and weak demand.
According to customs data, a total of 2,140 passenger cars were imported between January and March 15, 2026. Imports stood at 937 units in January, 771 units in February, and 403 units in the first 15 days of March.
More than two dozen brands were imported during this period. However, only 7 models crossed the 100-unit mark.
The Tata Tiago EV is the most imported model. Sipradi Trading brought in 274 units, largely for taxi use.
The Dongfeng Nammi VIGO ranks second. MAW Vriddhi imported 170 units in the same period.
The Chery iCaur V23 stands third. SPG Automobiles imported 152 units. The model is currently gaining strong demand in the market.
The Tata Punch EV is in fourth position with 150 units imported by Sipradi Trading.
The fifth position goes to the Hyundai Creta. Laxmi Intercontinental imported 126 CKD units. The model is now being assembled in Nepal.
In sixth place is the BYD Sealion 7. Cimex Inc. imported 106 units of the premium SUV.
