KATHMANDU : Piaggio has confirmed that it is developing a new range of affordable commuter scooters for India, with the first models set to launch in the first half of 2027.

The new scooters will be built on an all-new platform developed specifically for the Indian market. Instead of introducing a single model, the company plans to launch multiple variants under the same brand with different features and specifications.

Piaggio Chairman and Managing Director Diego Graffi said the project is progressing rapidly. He added that the initial focus will be on the Indian market, although exports to African countries are also being considered.

The upcoming scooters are expected to rival popular models such as the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, and Suzuki Access. This will mark Piaggio’s entry into the high-volume commuter scooter segment, where competitive pricing will play a key role.

Graffi acknowledged that Piaggio has struggled to compete in the affordable scooter market in the past due to higher-priced offerings. He said the company aims to bridge that gap with the upcoming product range.

Production will take place at Piaggio’s Baramati plant near Pune, which the company says has enough manufacturing capacity to support the new scooter lineup.
