KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City is set to launch a night-time public bus service from April 14, 2026, marking the beginning of the Nepali New Year.

The service will be operated in collaboration with Sajha Yatayat to improve late-evening mobility within the capital.

According to the metropolis, the night buses will operate daily from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM across two major corridors; north-south and east-west routes.

Under the north-south route, buses will run from Lagankhel to Budhanilkantha, passing through Patan Hospital, Alka, Norvic, Prasuti Griha, Trauma Center, Bir Hospital, Kanti Children’s Hospital, Teaching Hospital, and Gangalal Heart Center. The total route length is approximately 16 kilometers.

Similarly, the east-west route will connect Thankot to Tribhuvan International Airport via Satungal, Kalanki, Kalimati, Tripureshwor, Thapathali, Maitighar Mandala, Baneshwor, Minbhawan, and Tinkune. This corridor covers around 20 kilometers.

In the initial phase, four electric buses will be deployed across the two routes. Buses are scheduled to arrive at designated stops at 20-minute intervals. For passenger safety, all buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras, and city police personnel will be deployed during operations.

Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said the initiative aims to address the lack of public transportation after 8:00 PM, which currently forces commuters to rely on expensive travel options. She noted that students, women, and late-hour workers have been particularly affected by the absence of reliable public transportation at night.

The metropolis aims to develop a modern, integrated, safe, and sustainable public transportation system and remains open to collaboration with partners to further strengthen urban mobility services.
