KATHMANDU : Geely is preparing a next-generation solid-state battery with an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg. The company plans to begin pilot deployment of the technology in vehicles in 2027.
Geely says the battery could enable EVs to achieve more than 1,000 km of range on a single charge, bringing their driving range closer to that of diesel-powered vehicles. The company also claims a potential lifespan of up to 1 million km.
An energy density of 500 Wh/kg would represent a major improvement over current EV batteries. Higher energy density allows automakers to either reduce battery weight while maintaining range or increase range without significantly increasing the battery pack size.
The technology is being developed within Geely Holding, which has a portfolio that includes Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and Smart. Geely has already begun real-world validation of its solid-state battery technology, with wider pilot deployment planned for 2027.
Geely has been developing solid-state batteries for several years. Earlier this year, the company said it would complete its first in-house all-solid-state battery pack in 2026 and conduct vehicle-level validation.
However, the 2027 timeline refers to pilot deployment rather than mass production. Geely has not yet provided a clear timeline for large-scale production or consumer vehicles using the 500 Wh/kg battery.
The company has also not disclosed all the technical details of the battery, including its exact chemistry. Therefore, the claimed energy density, range and lifespan will need to be validated through further testing.
Geely is not alone in targeting high-density solid-state batteries. Other major Chinese automakers, including CATL and BYD, are also targeting 2027 for solid-state battery pilot production and testing.
