KATHMANDU: Xiaomi has introduced a major update to its SU7 electric sedan, further strengthening its position as a key rival to the Tesla Model 3 in China. The updated model is scheduled to go on sale by April 2026.

The SU7 was Xiaomi’s first car and has been on sale for less than two years. The company says the update is aimed at keeping the model competitive in China’s fast-moving EV market.

Visually, the changes are limited. The updated SU7 gets a new Capri Blue exterior color, a revised lower front grille, and a new 20-inch wheel design. Inside, Xiaomi has added a new interior color, ambient lighting, and revised seats, steering wheel, and center console.

The biggest updates are mechanical. Xiaomi has expanded the 800V-class electrical architecture across the entire lineup. The Standard and Pro variants now operate at 752 volts, while the Max version uses a 900V system.

Charging performance has seen a major improvement, with Xiaomi claiming the SU7 can add up to 416 miles of range in just 15 minutes under China’s CLTC testing cycle. Alongside faster charging, the claimed driving range has also increased, with the Standard variant rated at 447 miles, the Pro at 560 miles, and the Max at 518 miles, all measured using the CLTC standard.

Power outputs have also increased. The single-motor versions now produce 320 horsepower, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Max delivers 690 horsepower. The Pro variant now includes dual-chamber air suspension, previously exclusive to the top trim.

Safety updates include an emergency power supply for rear door releases and two additional airbags, following scrutiny over the use of electronic door handles in crash situations.

Prices have risen by around USD 2,000 across the range. Despite this, the SU7 Standard starts at about USD 32,700, remaining cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 in China.

Xiaomi sold over 400,000 vehicles in its first full year of automotive operations. The company has not confirmed export plans, but the latest update shows its intent to stay aggressive in the global EV race.
