KATHMANDU: Nepal has emerged as one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle markets in the world, ranking second globally in EV penetration. In 2025, electric vehicles accounted for around 73 percent of new car sales in the country. Government tax incentives, expanding charging infrastructure, and availability of feature-rich EVs at competitive prices have significantly boosted four-wheeler EV adoption.

However, the same momentum has not yet been seen in the two-wheeler segment. Electric scooters currently account for only about 4 percent of total new two-wheeler sales. Although more than three dozen electric scooter brands are available in Nepal, only a handful have managed to sustain their presence in the market.

Amid this scenario, Indian electric scooter brand Ampere has re-entered the Nepali market through STC Auto Solution Pvt. Ltd., introducing the Magnus Neo and Nexus electric scooters.

MeroAuto spoke with Vikas Singh, Managing Director of Greaves Electric Mobility Limited, the parent company of Ampere about the brand’s Nepal strategy, market challenges, charging ecosystem, and future plans. Edited excerpts:

How suitable are Ampere scooters for Nepal?

The geographical and road conditions of India and Nepal are quite similar. Since Ampere scooters are already well established in India, we believe they are equally suitable for Nepal. Nepal’s EV market is growing rapidly, which encouraged us to re-enter this market. Nepal is a very important market for us going forward.

How will Ampere’s second innings in Nepal move ahead?

This marks Ampere’s second chapter in Nepal. Our first priority is to address concerns of existing customers from earlier operations. We plan to organize service camps and directly reach customers to resolve pending issues. Alongside this, we will gradually introduce new products tailored for the Nepali market.

Ampere is performing strongly in India, and we are also preparing for an upcoming IPO. We hold a strong position in both two-wheeler and three-wheeler EV segments, with service quality remaining our core focus.

What is the key USP of Ampere scooters?

Ampere uses LFP batteries across its products. These batteries have been tested in extreme temperatures ranging from minus 40°C to plus 60°C, making them suitable for Nepal’s diverse climate conditions.

The battery offers a lifecycle of around 2,000 charge cycles, ensuring long-term durability. The Nexus scooter, recently introduced in Nepal, was awarded Scooter of the Year in India, which reflects the product’s quality and reliability.

Pricing plays a major role in Nepal’s competitive EV market. How does Ampere position itself?

We offer scooters across three segments, entry-level, value, and premium. Since we operate our own production facilities, we are able to maintain competitive pricing while ensuring strong product quality. Our goal is to deliver products that offer genuine value for money.

Do you see Chinese or Indian brands as your main competitors?

Rather than competing directly with other EV brands, our primary focus is to compete with ICE two-wheelers. The ICE two-wheeler market in Nepal remains significantly large. Our growth strategy is to gradually capture market share from conventional petrol-powered scooters.

What advantages do Ampere EV scooters offer compared to combustion-engine scooters?

In terms of durability, Ampere scooters are comparable to combustion-engine models, and we have already demonstrated this in existing markets. Our scooters feature strong payload capacity and a double-frame chassis, making them practical for daily use. Ownership and maintenance costs are significantly lower compared to petrol scooters.

Features such as LFP batteries, hill-hold assist, and connectivity functions further enhance usability features typically unavailable in conventional scooters.

What are your annual sales targets in Nepal?

At this stage, our immediate goal is not aggressive sales volume. Our priority is to build brand recognition and increase EV awareness among customers. Once awareness improves and customer confidence grows, sales will follow naturally.

What are your plans for charging network expansion?

Ampere scooters can be charged using existing charging points. Instead of setting up proprietary charging infrastructure, we plan to collaborate with existing charging service providers in Nepal.
