KATHMANDU: Dongfeng Motors has announced plans to launch two affordable electric vehicles in Canada in 2027. The Chinese automaker aims to introduce the Box 01 and Vigo with prices below around USD 25,000, making them among the most affordable EVs in the Canadian market.
The announcement was made during a company event in Montreal, where Dongfeng showcased several models from its global lineup. The move follows Canada’s decision to allow the import of up to 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles each year under a reduced import tariff.
The Box 01, marketed as the Nammi Box in some countries, is a compact electric hatchback powered by a 94 hp front-mounted electric motor. It offers a claimed driving range of up to 430 km on a single charge and is designed as an affordable urban EV with seating for five.
The Vigo, meanwhile, is a compact electric SUV that rivals models such as the Kia Seltos. It will be offered in two variants. The Air version is expected to deliver a claimed range of up to 401 km, while the Pro variant can travel up to 480 km on a full charge. Both versions use a 161 hp front-mounted electric motor.
Besides these two EVs, Dongfeng also displayed the all-electric 007 sports sedan along with three plug-in hybrid models, the Voyah Free luxury SUV, MHERO II off-roader and the Voyah Dream premium MPV. However, only the fully electric models are expected to benefit from Canada’s reduced import tariff.
The company has also launched its Canadian website, where all six models are listed as undergoing homologation and regulatory approval. Final specifications and launch dates will be confirmed after the approval process is completed.
The Box 01, sold as the Nammi Box, and the Vigo are already familiar names in Nepal. The Nammi Box has already established itself as a successful model in Nepal’s EV market, while the Dongfeng Vigo is also making its mark and steadily gaining popularity among buyers.
