KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has tightened rules on vehicle use during elections. The new rules will apply to the House of Representatives elections on March 5, 2026.

According to the proposed code of conduct, candidates must take prior permission to use any vehicle for campaigning. Vehicles used without approval will be seized. Action will also be taken against those involved.

Each candidate will be allowed to use only two vehicles. These can be two-, three-, or four-wheelers, as decided by the Commission. In areas where vehicles are not allowed, candidates can use up to four horses.

The use of vehicles with foreign number plates will not be allowed. Candidates are also banned from changing the color or appearance of vehicles.

Candidates and political parties cannot use vehicles to transport voters. However, some exceptions are included. Pregnant women, new mothers, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities may use vehicles with permission from the election officer.

The Commission says the rules are meant to ensure fair elections and prevent misuse of vehicles during campaigning.
