KATHMANDU: Japanese automaker Honda has decided to manufacture electric cars in India.

According to the company, its India-made electric vehicles (EVs) could be launched within six months. Honda says it plans to launch EVs made in India by March 2026.

Although Honda has been selling EVs in China, Europe and the United States, it has yet to introduce an EV in India or the wider SAARC region. The company says its upcoming electric car for South Asia will be developed using a higher proportion of locally sourced materials.

Honda President and CEO Takashi Nakajima said the upcoming EV will be an entirely new model.

Honda earlier revealed plans to release an electric version of its mid-size SUV, the Elevate, produced and sold in India.
However, Honda President and CEO Takashi Nakajima said the upcoming EV will not be based on the Elevate but will instead be an entirely new model.

Though Honda has not disclosed which specific model it will produce, industry observers expect the automaker’s first India-made EV to be a hatchback.

Alongside vehicle production, Honda also plans to develop a large EV charging network across India. The company has indicated that these charging stations will be concentrated along major highways and in key urban centers to support the transition to electric mobility.
